The Sovereign instituted The King's Medal for Courage in the Cause of Freedom by Royal Warrant dated 23 August 1945. Its purpose was to recognise foreign civilians or military personnel of allied countries who had performed acts of courage, such as assisting British escapees in enemy occupied territory, in furtherance of the interests of the British Commonwealth in the allied cause during the Second World War. Around 3,200 awards of the King's Medal for Courage were made.
